Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – In December he was training for a world title fight in his weight class.
Now, Brandon MMA fighter Curtis Demarce is just getting back on his feet.
During a sparring session, the unthinkable happened. A bad twist, his sparring partner landed wrong and he heard a sound no fighter likes to hear coming from his own body.
"All of his weight came down on my leg when I was turned the wrong way and we heard a pop," Demarce said.
Three weeks after surgery to repair a complete tear of his ACL, Brandon’s best known martial arts fighter began working on his mobility.
"For the last few weeks I’ve just been working a lot with motion. So range of motion, trying to get that extension and flex back," said Demarce.
Prior to his injury, Demarce’s ranking was top three among Canada’s mixed martial arts fighters and was training to fight Mui Tai champion Kyle Nelson who is ranked #1 in Canada and #2 in all of Europe.
He decided to go under the knife of a famous sports doctor who made the prognosis quickly.
"We ended up going to the Pan Am clinic, I know the Winnipeg Jets surgeon there, Dr. Peter MacDonald," Demarce said.
"He didn’t take long to discover I had a partial tear in my miniscus and a complete tear of my ACL," said Demarce.
Demarce was happy to take any and all doctor’s orders from MacDonald.
"I just kind of went under his wing and we booked him for surgery and here we are, I’m happy it’s over," Demarce said.
The 29-year-old Demarce says he will take his time to get back in the ring.
"I gotta look at this and take things serious because with the ACL it can happen again and I just really want be careful, I want to have a longer career," said Demarce.
The title fight will have to wait until the fall but Demarce will still get the opportunty thanks to some rescheduling.
"That world title that was supposed to take place on February 10th, I still have that opportunity when I return. That contract is still in place but I’m not going to rush into it," Demarce said.
There is a strong possibility of a warm up fight before the title bout.
"I want to make sure I’m 100% and can give my best and perform at the highest level at mixed martial arts can and if I have to take a warm up fight to get rid of that ring rust I might do that as well," Demarce said.
His doctors and trainers are strongly advising him to wait until the fall before he fights again as this type of injury usually has a 6 month recuperation period.
"There’s no set date as far as my return, nothing is set in stone yet I just want to take the time to properly heal," said Demarce.
However, Demarce’s next fight is already in the works.
"What’s going to happen is Kyle Nelson, the original opponent I was to fight, is fighting Mega Man who is top 3 in Russia later in April and I’ll get the winner of that bout later this year and I’m looking forward to it," Demarce said.
