Proposal going before BSD board members

Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - Brandon's Mayor is making a special appearance at Monday's Brandon School Division board meeting.

Rick Chrest said he will be making a presentation to school board members, proposing a youth forum on drug addiction.

"Certainly, it's a burgeoning and growing issue unfortunately, especially with respect to crystal meth. We're not alone, this is a big issue in many communities across Canada," said Chrest.

Chrest said a lot of these issues fall outside the areas of expertise for many members on City Council, and believes this is a great opportunity to utilize the expertise of the school division when it comes to reaching young people.

"Probably primarily at the high school level, to bring more awareness to the youth of Brandon, and to encourage them to stay away from drugs in the first place," said Chrest.

Chrest said being proactive with education and awareness is one way to help curb the issue in Brandon.

According to Chrest, other stakeholders have yet to be determined, but said there are other local organizations with expertise that are supportive of the project and willing to participate.

Chrest said detailed planning will start in earnest after the board meeting, and hopes to hold the forum later this spring - either in April or May.
