Winnipeg, MB (CKLQ) – Connor Barley and the Selkirk Steelers scored six unanswered goals to beat the Virden Oil Capitals 7-2 at the MTS Iceplex during the first day at the MJHL Showcase.
Virden scored the first goal 7:04 in the first period, when Kyle Salaway scored his 16th goal of the year. Selkirk didn’t score their first goal until under 2:30 left in the period when Skyler Thorsteinson got his first of the season. Just over a minute later, Nolan Ferguson scored to put the Steelers up on top.
In the second period, It was the Connor Barley show as he scored three goals in five and a half minutes to put Selkirk up 5-1.
In the third William Middleton scored the first goal putting Selkirk up 6-1. Jenan Knorr responded for Viden, but Selkirk got the last goal of the game with three seconds left Shanan McFadden got his fourth of the year.
Selkirk scored all seven goals on only 24 shots on net, putting starting goaltender Riley McVeigh out of the game after the second period, after letting in 5 of the 19 shots on net.
Virden falls to 19-10-1-0 on the year, and has 39 points on the year. Selkirk with the win moves to two points behind Virden for 5th in the MJHL.
