Regina, SK (CKLQ) – In a fitting tribute, the goalie with Tragically Hip lyrics painted on his mask turned in a spectacular performance on Wednesday night.
Despite a 2-1 loss, Logan Thompson, who has the lyrics to the hit song “Wheat Kings” scripted under the cage of his helmet turned aside 45 shots and was named the game’s 2nd star.
The Pats opened the scoring on the powerplay when George King redirected home his 4th of the season. The early goal would be the only one to find the twine for virtually forty minutes as neither team could buy a goal.
The Pats threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Wheat Kings outshooting them 35-14 through forty minutes, but couldn’t beat Thompson. Brandon was shorthanded for 7:00 in the 2nd period after Evan Weinger was given a major penalty for a collision with Robbie Holmes. With the help of Thompson, the Wheat Kings were able to kill it off.
In the third, the Wheat Kings desperately tried to get back into the game but couldn’t convert. While on the powerplay late and the goaltender pulled Jake Leschyshyn was hauled down on the way to the empty net and was automatically awarded a goal.
Ty Lewis finally beat Tyler Brown late in the third but it was too little too late and the Pats would hang on for their third straight victory.
Brandon will hit the reset button and welcome a pair of BC Division opponents to the Wheat City this weekend. The Vancouver Giants come to town Friday night, with Victoria rolling through on Saturday. Both games are at 7:30 at Westman Place.
