Aim is to allow provincial officials to crack down on illegal marijuana trafficking

Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - The Pallister government is changing cannabis possession rules.

Justice Minister Cliff Cullen wants amendments to the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act, to make it illegal to possess more than 30 grams of non-medical cannabis in public.  Also, it would be an offense to possess cannabis lacking proper packaging, stamps or labels.

While there are federal regulations in place, Provincial officials currently have no similar mandate.

The change would allow police and Manitoba Finance officers to ticket and fine smugglers, and to seize illegal cannabis, much as they do with illegal tobacco products.

Cullen notes there would be an exemption in the provincial rules to allow individuals to remove legal cannabis from original packaging for personal storage and consumption.
