Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings added another 20-year-old to the mix on Tuesday afternoon.
The club sent a 2018 – 3rd Round Draft Pick to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for forward Evan Weinger.
The Los Angeles, CA native has appeared in 187 WHL games, scoring 37 times and adding 52 assists.
“[Evan has] good skill that will contribute offensively,” said Wheat Kings General Manager Grant Armstrong. “He plays with high pace and energy.”
The 6’0? 195 lb. Weinger recently attended the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings development camp before being returned for his fourth and final WHL season.
The trade gives Brandon four overage players with Weinger joining Kade Jensen, Logan Thompson and James Shearer as 20-year-olds. However, Shearer will be out for the foreseeable future recovering from a torn achilles tendon. Shearer’s injury allows the Wheat Kings to carry four overage players. (WHL rule is three per team)
Weinger was scheduled to land in Brandon around 4:30 on Tuesday afternoon and is expected to be in the lineup when the Wheat Kings welcome Edmonton on Wednesday night.
