Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings fired everything but the kitchen sink at the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night but couldn’t get the go-ahead goal they needed in a 3-2 shootout loss at Westoba Place.
For the sixth time this season, the Brandon Wheat Kings opened the scoring. With the referee’s arm up for a delayed penalty, Stelio Mattheos took a pass and roofed a wrist shot from an impossible angle to give Brandon a 1-0 lead.
In the 2nd, the Broncos would tie it up on a defensive miscue at the Wheat King blueline. A bouncing puck sent the Broncos in on a 2on0 breakaway and Alec Zawatsky made no mistake burying his team-leading 4th of the season.
Just four minutes later the Wheat Kings would regain the lead on the powerplay as Stelio Mattheos beat Joel Hofer on the short side giving him two on the night. Hofer made 53 saves on the night.
In the third, Andrew Fyten bounced a pass off the chest of Schael Higson, up over the head of Ethan Kruger and into the back of the net to tie the game at two.
Kruger, who was making his WHL debut made 30 saves.
In overtime, neither team could find the back of the net. The Broncos had a powerplay in the extra frame but hit two goal posts and couldn’t find any luck around the net.
In the shootout, the Broncos got two more saves from Hofer who was named the game’s first star. Alec Zawatsky and Max Patterson scored for the Broncos to give them their first win of the season.
