Parks Canada not certain if the lake can open for spring and summer use

Brandon, MB (CKLQ) - Whirlpool Lake in Riding Mountain National Park is being reopened for winter use, after tests for zebra mussels came back negative.

The lake and its campground were closed last year as a precaution after genetic traces of the mussel were discovered, but not the mussels themselves.

A decision has not been made on whether it will remain open during the spring and summer.

Parks Canada says the road into the Lake will be closed to motor vehicles, but will be usable as a wilderness trail.  Ice fishing will not be permitted.

The agency say they will continue to monitor the lake.
