More so this year than years past, substitute teachers are at a premium as full time teachers take more sick days, being cautious in case cold symptoms are a sign of the coronavirus.

In Winnipeg the Louis Riel school divisions teachers took just over 760 sick days so far in September up more than 200 from 2019.

Meanwhile here in Brandon, the school divisions Superintendent, Dr. Marc D. Casavant says the they've prepared for the increase in sick days.

He had this to say in an email to Q Country/Star FM News:

"The Brandon School Division along with all other school divisions in Manitoba anticipated there would be more leaves accessed this year due to COVID-19 and we are seeing some increases. In being cognizant of that fact, the Brandon School Division has roughly 200 substitute teachers for approximately 621 full time equivalent teachers and about 150 substitute support staff for approximately 523 full time equivalent support staff members."
