Brandon drops 4-3 decision

The Brandon Wheat Kings came out flat on Saturday night and quickly found themselves in a hole they couldn't climb out of.

The Rebels scored three times in the opening frame to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting Brandon 11-6 to start the game.

"Our start killed us tonight," said Head Coach Dave Lowry. "It's an area of concern for us. We knew that Red Deer was going to be ready to play. I'm disappointed in our effort and disappointed in our start. We weren't very good at all."

The Rebels would add another one early in the second to open up a 4-0 lead before Brandon finally cracked the goose-egg, late in the middle frame on the powerplay.

Ben McCartney's 6th powerplay goal of the season with less than 3:00 left in the 2nd period gave Brandon some life heading to the third period.

Brandon outshot the Rebels 34-14 in the final forty minutes, and got the game within one late in the third but were stymied by the excellent goaltending of Byron Fancy, who kicked aside 37 shots for the win.

"We challenged some guys in between periods, we have to be better," said Lowry. "Our leaders have to do a better job as well. Our expectation is that these guys have to do a better job of preparing themselves to play."

Cole Reinhardt scored twice for Brandon while Jiri Patera stopped 21 saves in the losing effort.

"For whatever reason, we weren't sharp today," added Lowry. "We didn't give ourselves a chance tonight and that's the thing that is most disappointing."

Brandon scratched Riley Ginnell, Bode Hagan and Jack Zayat all of whom were coaches' decisions. Attendance at the Westerner Park Centrium was 3,794.

The Wheat Kings will now head up the highway to Edmonton where they will take on the Oil Kings on Sunday afternoon. Catch the game on QCountry Radio starting with the pre-game show at 4:30 MB time. (5:00 Puck Drop.)
