Brandon earns a single point

For the second straight game, the Brandon Wheat Kings took a top team from the BC Division to a shootout.

The Wheat Kings failed to score in the shootout and dropped a 2-1 decision to the 2020 Kia Memorial Cup hosts on Tuesday night.

Despite the loss, the Wheat Kings outshot the Rockets 34-23 and had several opportunities thwarted by goaltender Roman Basran.

"I like the way we played the game tonight," said Head Coach Dave Lowry.  "We did a lot of really good things and stayed with it from start to finish. This team is hosting the Memorial Cup and they've added some pieces. I thought our guys equated themselves very well tonight."

The Rockets opened the scoring on the powerplay when newly acquired forward Matthew Wedman scored his first for his new team.

In the second, the Wheat Kings would respond on a powerplay of their own. Ridly Greig finished off a beautiful passing play to tie the game up at one.

Brandon fired everything but the kitchen sink at the Rocket goal but Basran stopped 33 of the 34 shots that came his way.

"We played to our strengths tonight," added Lowry.  "We used our speed, got pucks to the goal line and were first on a lot of pucks. That's how we need to play to be successful."

Both teams were relatively cautious in the overtime period and neither team took many risks, sending this game to a shootout.

It took six-shooters, but Wedman was the only one to find the back of the net, lifting the Rockets to their 4th straight victory.

Despite earning just a single point, the Wheat Kings coaching staff was happy with the effort and execution.

"We did a really good job eliminating chances," said Lowry. "We do have some young guys on the back end and will have to keep working on it but like the steps that we are taking defensively. Jiri was able to see the puck and if there were rebounds we got them out of the way."

Patera was excellent between the pipes for Brandon, stopping 22 of 23 through 65 minutes and turning aside two of three Rockets shooters.

Brandon now has points in three straight and will look to carry that momentum into Friday's Teddy Bear Toss game vs the Moose Jaw Warriors. (7:30 puck drop)
