7-3 over Swift Current

A third-period offensive explosion lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 7-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday night at Westoba Place.

All but four players found the scoresheet and six players had multi-point nights as the Wheat Kings battled back from down 3-1 at the second intermission.

"When you get guys contributing from all lines it makes you tough to play against," said Assistant Coach Don MacGillivray. "When those guys score goals they learn that they can contribute and they push themselves harder. It was a good way to come back and win, it showed a lot of character."

Brandon opened the scoring just 5:49 into the hockey game on Duncan Pierce's first of two on the night.

Sergei Alkhimov, Haydin Oster and Aiden Bulych scored in succession to put the Broncos up by a pair at the 2nd intermission.

"We liked how we played for most of the 2nd period, but just made a couple of mistakes that they turned into goals," added MacGillivray. "We outplayed them and out-chanced them but their goalie kept the score 3-1. In the third, we stayed with it, didn't deviate from the plan and started to play like we can."

Lynden McCallum and Ty Thorpe would join Pierce with two goals on the night while Cole Reinhardt continued to handle a hot stick, scoring his 18th of the season and fifth goal in his last three games to help the Wheat Kings mount the comeback.

Jiri Patera stopped 24 shots for the win, while Reece Klassen who looked unflappable through forty minutes allowed six goals on 12 shots in the final twenty minutes to take the loss.

Brandon improves their record to 13-15-1-0 and will now turn their attention to Friday night when they welcome the top team in the BC Division.

"Kamloops is a good hockey club and they have depth up and down the lineup," added MacGillivray. "It's a big game for us that we will use as a measuring stick. We've played well against top teams this year and we look forward to building off tonights game and carrying it into Friday."

Game time Friday night is 7:30. The QCountry pre-game show begins at 7:00.
