It wasn't a "Picasso" by any stretch of the imagination, but the Brandon Wheat Kings got the job done on Friday night, beating the Red Deer Rebels 2-1 at Westoba Place.
Brandon got goals from Luka Burzan and Marcus Sekundiak along with 41 saves from Jiri Patera as they remain in sole possession of third place in the East Division with the victory.
It was a sloppy effort for the home side, who were outshot 42-23 in the game, including a 18-7 run in the second period.
"I thought we were flat tonight but I like the end result," said Head Coach Dave Lowry. "I like the way we dug in and were better in the third. If you get outshot like we did in the second you have to look at what you're doing and we weren't managing pucks well. It's a good thing Jiri was sharp, he made some big saves for us."
It was the second straight night Patera has faced 40+ shots, a point of concern for Lowry and his coaching staff.
"We would like to give Jiri an easy night here," he added. "If we paid more attention to little details and managed the puck it could have been a different game from the onset. We thought it was going to be easy. This is a team fighting for a playoff spot and they weren't going to go away."
Brandon's penalty kill was put to the test on Friday, killing off a major penalty to Ridly Greig along with a two-man advantage. The Rebels were unable to convert on any of their four opportunities.
The lone Rebel goal came off the stick of Dallon Mellin. Red Deer was without Captain Dawson Barteaux who was traded at the WHL deadline. The Foxwarren, MB native was acquired by the Winnipeg ICE for a plethora of draft picks.
Meanwhile, Brandon's lone trade of the day saw Bode Hagen moved to the Swift Current Broncos for a 2021 6th round draft pick.
Reid Perepeluk, who was acquired from Prince George on Friday night, made his Wheat King debut. The Yorkton, SK native finished with 1 shot on goal and was a -1.
Brandon will welcome the Cougars to Wetoba Place on Wednesday night to continue this four-game homestand.
