The City of Brandon did two nights of mosquito fogging last week, but it now appears their numbers have bounced back up.
Brandon residents have hit social media this week to complain of high numbers in their neighbourhoods – and many want the city to do another round of spraying.
At the regular council meeting on Monday, June 20th, 2022, City Council passed a motion to begin city-wide fogging for nuisance mosquitoes immediately. According to the city’s website – the last average trap count was 141 this past Monday, June 27th which was ‘Low ‘- but a big jump from an average of 34 per trap on Sunday, June 26th.
Brandon uses the insecticide DeltaGard 20EW in its mosquito fogging program. They say the product is approved for use by Health Canada and is a lower-risk product compared to the product used in past years.
The exposure to bees, birds, mammals, fish, and plants is expected to be minimal, given the reduced application rate, timing of application, and the minimal deposits in soil, water and plants that are anticipated from this application.
