The City of Brandon has a tender out for private security to patrol a variety of areas in the community.
According to the city’s website, the contracts are scheduled to run between May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023, with the possibility of an extension. The tender closes on February 1st.
The document says private security patrols will be in addition to those provided by Brandon police and non-profits, such as Brandon Bear Clan, and will assist with the revitalization of the downtown by creating a “safe and positive environment” in the neighbourhood.
They’ll report on issues like burned-out street lights, panhandling, the disposing of discarded needles, and will also be responsible for reporting “homeless encampments or congregation sites” and monitor derelict buildings.
Specifically, private security would make the rounds at Princess Park and the Princess Park washrooms, the Kristopher Campbell Memorial Skateboard Plaza, the Brandon Public Library, Brandon Transit Info Centre, parking lots between Rosser Avenue and Pacific Avenue and banks that have public ATMs.

Other parks and recreation facilities on the list include the fire pit area at the Green Acres Community Centre, Rideau Park Pavilion, Andrews Field Complex, Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex and The Riverbank Discovery Centre.
The tender also includes contracts for security at Brandon City Hall and with Brandon Fire and Emergency Services for property security and fire watch – and patrols would also be needed for the Brandon Municipal Cemetery.
