A new age-friendly Brandon Telephone Information Line debuts October 1st.
The new telephone line (204) 729-2525 connects community residents to local activities and programs for older adults – everything from activities, clubs and support groups to recreation opportunities, hobby groups, and sports teams.
Age-Friendly Brandon stems from the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote social participation, health, and security for people of all ages.
Johanna Leseho, Age-Friendly Subcommittee Chair on Respect and Social Inclusion, says “We’re excited to launch the Age-Friendly telephone line so that older adults will be able to discover the wide array of activities available to them in Brandon. Before doing this research, I had no idea there was so much to do in Brandon, and so many ways to engage with others. I am pleased that we can offer a telephone line, rather than simply a website, so that older adults will be able to easily access this information.”
The telephone line is sponsored by the City of Brandon and represents a collective effort between multiple organizations serving older adults in Brandon.
Susan Boyachek, a member of the Age-Friendly Brandon Committee of Council, says “I am honored to work with a group of volunteers that have a vision to enhance healthy ageing and inclusiveness for older adults and their families by providing a simple, userfriendly way to seek out activities and resources. What easier way to connect members of the community than with an easy to remember, locally answered, telephone information line. We want everyone to feel comfortable and encouraged to reach out in search of
opportunities within the Community and we believe this new telephone information line will reduce the uncertainty of where to call.”
The Age-Friendly Brandon Information Line (204) 729-2525 is maintained between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m – and callers can speak to someone (live) or after hours leave a message for a return call to have their questions answered.
The initiative is supported through Age-Friendly Brandon, City of Brandon. You can contact them if you would like more information or would like to add activities/programs to the telephone line listing.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic some activities may be discontinued or offered in alternative ways rather than in-person.
