The Brandon Wheat Kings earned their fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday night, beating the Swift Current Broncos 6-1.
Nolan Ritchie scored twice, while Rylan Thiessen and Lynden McCallum each notched a goal and an assist in the win.
“I like that we won the hockey game,” said Wheat Kings head coach, Don MacGillivray. “I thought we were cheating ourselves a little bit tonight, I didn’t think we played our best game. But we did what we needed to do – sometimes those games are tough when they look like a mismatch on paper, and Swift works hard.”
Ben McCartney extended his point scoring streak to seven games with an assists on Thiessen’s first as a Wheat King. Brandon scored three times on the powerplay and got 17 saves from Ethan Kruger while outshooting the Broncos 33-18.
The Wheat Kings win earns them a clean sweep over the Broncos, outscoring them 19-5 in the process. The win puts Brandon three-points up on Saskatoon for top spot in the East Division, with two huge games this weekend.
“There were a lot of things in our game tonight that needs to get sharpened up for a team who doesn’t really like us very much in P.A,” added MacGillivray. “We’re expecting a tough game Saturday. They play the teams we’re fighting for first with – Winnipeg and Saskatoon – so they have something to play for and they’re a good club. They’re better than their record shows and we’ve had tough games against them in the Hub so I expect nothing less”.
