20 Years ago today Westman's NEW Radio Station hit the airwaves at 94.7 for the very first time.
Two Decades of Hit Music in Westman!
7:15am June 1st 2000, Western Manitoba was tuned to 94.7FM to hear what the area's newest radio station would sound like. Leading up to the launch, an entire week of the sound of a simple "tick tock" on a clock followed by a big voice saying "JUNE FIRST. SEVEN FIFTEEN AM." was followed by a split second of silence, and a monologue from a little boy (Tyler Glen's nephew Chad) talking about "The Soundtrack of My life". A nod to how music defines us. How music freezes us time time, yet helps build a bridge to the future.
After a moving message from a young voice, jingles and production his the air, introducing Westman to 94.7 Starfm. The first new music station in the market in decades. And while promising Today's Best Music, Star promised a great variety of workday music too, and a new lineup that would have an on air staff LIVE 7 days a week. The original cast would include Tyler Glen, Chrissy T, Ryan Richards, Chris Sumner and Rich Pentney.
The first song ever played incorportated NEW Music, a CLASSIC Hit and an artist from the 80's who was simply known by one name. Madonna. The remake of American Pie (orignally done by Don Maclean) would be the station's first song. And as it read in the Brandon Sun that morning, June 1st 2000. A NEW STAR WAS BORN!
