– It’s a dream come true for Carberry’s Braden Calvert and his Winnipeg team. Calvert stole four in the fourth en route to a 7-5 victory over New Brunswick in the final at the Canadian Junior Men’s Curling Championship. Calvert and crew now head to Switzerland next month to represent Canada at the worlds. CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston has the full story here.
– Fantastic four for Terry McNamee in the Brandon Sun Westman Super of Curling. McNamee scored three in the first end and beat Kelly Marnoch 5-1 in the final to capture a record-setting fourth consecutive title. In the semifinals, McNamee got past Brian Fowler 7-3 while Marnoch defeated 5-2.
– The Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters honoured the best in 2013. Jennifer Jones and her rink of Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer and Dawn McEwen were named team of the year for for securing their spot in the Sochi Olympics. The male athlete of the year is Chicago Blackhawks’ captain Jonathan Toews while swimmer Breanne Siwicki earned the top female award. Toews captured the Stanley Cup with the Hawks and was named the NHL’s top defensive forward while Siwicki had a record-breaking gold medal performance in 1,500 metre at the Canada Summer Games.
– The Southwest Cougars snapped a four-game skid with a 6-2 win over the Eastman Selects in the Manitoba ‘AAA’ Midget Hockey League. Graeme Hore scored a pair of goals and Brandon Masson had three assists for the Cougars, who sit tied for sixth-place in the overall standings. In other action, the Yellowhead Chiefs dropped a 4-1 decision against the Winnipeg Wild. Morgan Geekie got the lone goal for the Chiefs, who have lost five in a row.
– The Pembina Valley Hawks outshot the Norman Wild 61-26, but dropped a 2-1 decision in Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League action. Kenzie-Dawn Dearsley had the lone goal for Pembina Valley.
– Al Montoya made 34 saves as the Winnipeg Jets rallied for a 3-1 win in Chicago. Blake Wheeler had two of Winnipeg’s third period goals as the team improved to 6-1 under new head coach Paul Maurice. Andrew Ladd also scored for the Jets, who are seven points back a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
– Kevin Bieksa scored twice including the overtime winner as Vancouver downed Phoenix 5-4, Edmonton snapped a six-game skid with a 5-1 win against Nashville, the New York Rangers scored six unanswered goals to beat New Jersey 7-3 at Yankee Stadium and Florida downed Detroit 5-4 in a shootout.
– Stan was the man at the Aussie Open. Stan Wawrinka took advantage of Rafael Nadal’s back injury and knocked off the world’s #1 player to capture his first grand slam title.
– Scott Stallings finished atop the leaderboard for his third PGA Tour victory at the Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Weyburn’s Graham Delaet tied for second, one shot off the pace.
