Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson captured the Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship for the third time in four years on Monday.
Robertson scored three in the fifth end for a 5-2 lead and went on to a 7-3 victory over defending champion Bob Sigurdson of West Kildonan in the final at the Brandon Curling Club.
Robertson and his team of Doug Armour, Peter Prokopowich and Bob Scales join some elite company with the victory, as they join the Lloyd Gunnlaugson teams of the 1980’s in becoming just the second team to win three or more Provincial Senior Men’s titles.
"That’s pretty special company," said Roberston, "Really proud to be right in there with those guys, and we’re going to do our best to try and bring back another Canadian Championship too."
Team Robertson will represent Manitoba at the 2014 Canadian Senior Championships, which is being hosted at the Yellowknife Curling Centre March 22-30, 2014.
It’s the first ever National Championship in the Northwest Territories.
"I think we’re still playing at a fairly high level, but I do realize that you have to play your best when you are there too," said Robertson, "There’ll probably be new blood, there always is, but we’re ready for the challenge."
Robertson earned their way to the final by defeating Brandon’s Kelly McMechan 7-5 in the semifinal.
Earlier in the day, Sigurdson had defeated Robertson 6-4 in the 1-vs-1 Page Playoff game while McMechan beat Carl German 6-4 in the 2-vs-2 contest.
