The Assiniboine Community College Cougars claimed Hockey Manitoba’s Senior B Women’s Provincial title on Sunday, blanking Rage II 2-0 in the Championship Final.
Kira Nyhuis had a goal and an assist for ACC while Bree Vanhove scored the other Cougars’ goal and Kristin Friesen recorded her third shutout of the weekend.
"It’s finally nice to be here. We worked all year for this," said Nyhuis, "It was a whole team effort. I was here last year and we didn’t do to well but this year we have a whole good group of girls going. It was nice to finally get the win."
The Cougars went undefeated in four games on the weekend, outscoring their opponents 21-1 in the process.
"We had one goal scored against us in four games, so the girls played very, very well from the goaltending, defence and forwards," said ACC coach Terry Arksey, "They all contributed to this win, and it was a total team effort."
The Cougars are now headed to Red Deer, Alberta next month to compete in the Western Shield.
"I think our team came together this weekend, it’s probably the best weekend we’ve played together," added Nyhuis, "It’s set us up nicely for what’s to come."
The Western Shield will take place from April 10-13.
Meanwhile, the weekend’s Provincial Championship could prove to be a little bit of a test event for ACC.
The school is hoping to host the Western Shield in 2015.
