Artsoim Kalashnikov was the overtime hero for the Virden Oil Capitals on Wednesday night.
Kalashnikov’s unassisted goal 14:49 into the second overtime period lifted the Oil Caps to a 4-3 victory over the Swan Valley Stampeders and allowed Virden to advance to the second round of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs for the first time in their history.
The Oil Caps took the Sher-Wood Division semifinal four games to two and will now meet the Dauphin Kings in the Sher-Wood Division final.
On Wednesday, Virden rallied from a 3-1, second period deficit on goals by Curtis Oliver late in the second period and Corey Haverstick’s game-tying goal 5:10 into the third period.
Ben Williams also scored for the Oil Capitals while Adam Iwan had another solid outing in the Virden net, stopping 56 shots in finish the series with a 2.27 goals against average and .933 save percentage.
Kalashnikov led the Oil Capitals in scoring with four goals and eight points, all of which came in the final four games of the series after Virden had fallen behind two games to none.
The Sher-Wood Division final between Virden and Dauphin is expected to begin this weekend, with the official schedule expected to be released on Thursday.
