The top-seeded Virden Golden Bears are one win away from capturing their first-ever Provincial ‘AAA’ Girls’ High School Basketball Championship.
Logan Biccum poured in 17 points as the Bears beat the fourth-seeded Neelin Spartans 72-54 in Friday’s all-Westman semifinal.
"Keep your foot down from start to finish," Virden coach Stephen Densmore told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "We’re in the best shape of any team here and we know that. We’ll run teams into the ground by the third quarter and that’s been our game plan all year and we are just sticking with that."
Heidi Smith added 16 points as Virden advances to Saturday’s championship game.
On the ‘AAA’ boys’ side, the Spartans fell 67-40 in their semifinal against the #1 seeded Westgate Wings.
There will be no three-peat for the Boissevain Broncos at the ‘AA’ girls playdowns after losing in the semifinals while the Souris Sabres won their semifinal in overtime to advance.
At the ‘AA’ boys’ tournament, Boissevain has booked their spot for the final.
The top-seeded and two-time defending champion Hamiota Huskies have reached the final at the ‘A’ girls’ playdowns and will play the Glenboro Panthers for the top prize.
Glenboro has a chance to make it a clean sweep with the #1 seeded Panthers playing in the ‘A’ boys’ final.
