Mother Nature is delivering a dose of déjà vu with the cancellation of this weekend’s John Keogh High School Rugby Festival for the second straight season.
The weather forecast and the conditions at Brandon’s John Reilly Field will keep players off the pitch.
"When it gets cold like that you run an even bigger risk of players getting injured. They (grounds crew) felt the field conditions just weren’t tenable and that players safety is a priority," said Westman High School Rugby League president Brian Yon. "It’s extremely frustrating. Two years in a row for us that we’ve had to cancel. The John Keogh is I think a pretty big piece in terms of helping, especially the newer players, get introduced to the game. Now we’re just heading straight into our season as we did last year."
If the weather cooperates, the league’s regular season is slated to start next week.
