The Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction ceremony on Saturday.
Among the inductees in the 2014 class of the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame is Brandon-born Garth German.
"A bunch of your colleagues that you respect tell you you’re going into a hall of fame, that’s very humbling," said German.
During his playing career, German played with teams in Brandon, Virden, and Winnipeg and has fond memories of playing in the Wheat City.
"Brandon was a fantastic town for sports and for baseball," said German. "You felt like you were really doing something when you made a Brandon team for travel and just playing in the Brandon leagues was a pretty big deal."
German’s illustrious career included being a member of 20 provincial championship winning teams. He also represented Manitoba or Canada in competition on 30 occasions.
German says the honour that stands out most to him is being named All-Canadian shortstop at the 1987 Senior ‘A’ Canadian Championships.
"That was a big deal because those were the best ball players from across the nation," said German. "I was fortunate to have a pretty good tournament."
German joins Greg Bouchard, Bob Taylor and Fred Taylor as athletes that are set to be inducted this weekend.
Keith King will be enshrined as a builder; Joe Nespor and the late Nick Pliszka will be inducted into the coaches’ category while 1927-30 Uneedas Men’s, 1967-70 Pine Falls Canadians and 1994-96 Smitty’s Terminators will be inducted in the team category.
