It looks like dirt will be flying at the Souris Motor Speedway this summer.
A group is leasing the facility from the Souris Airport Committee, and will host six events at the track this summer.
The group has created and incorporated PASCAR (Prairie Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) as a not-for-profit organization to operate the facility.
"The track is in relatively decent shape, the track itself," said Matt Bootsman, "Everything else is old. The front wall is pretty old, the grandstands are still in decent shape. They just need some TLC to be brought back up to speed. And then, we’re going to make plans to re-do everything."
Bootsman says they hope to use community funding grants to bring the structures up-to-date over the next couple of years.
Meanwhile, the track schedule this year will include three test-and-tune events and three race days.
"We have no idea who’s going to show up, besides the cars we’ve already built. I’d say we have a good core of six or seven people with cars already," said Bootsman, "Our first date will be June 8th, and that’s a test-and-tune. Just bring your car out, one car on the track at a time, meet with the test guys, see the facility and get to know what’s going on."
Bootsman adds they’re going to open the facility at no charge for all six events.
The group’s website should be up and running at http://www.pascar.ca/ and you can also access their Facebook fan page.
