Using a foot-wedge is against the rules of golf! Who knew?
That fact and a look at the rest of golf’s rule book will be the subject of a pair of seminars being held in Brandon on Saturday (May 3rd).
"If there’s people going out and playing with a regular group of guys or gals that they normally play with, and they have an understanding that they’ll pull out that foot-wedge when needed, that’s okay," said Golf Manitoba executive director Dave Comaskey, "If you and I are going out playing a competitive game of golf, and we want to play by the rules, then we should be aware of the details of them."
Saturday’s sessions will be held at the Grand Valley Community Church in Brandon, and include a Handicap seminar from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and Rules seminar from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Comaskey adds placement of the ball when it can’t be played from ‘where it lies’ is likely the most misinterprepted set of rules in the game of golf.
As far as the Handicap seminar, Comaskey says its similar to the rules of golf — the average hacker probably doesn’t need to understand how it’s calculated, but anyone that plays competitively should.
"One of the big keys with the handicap system is that if people want to complete on a equalable basis and use their handicap to do so, then those people need to be keeping it correctly," said Comaskey, "The basis of the whole system is that you or I could go out and play against Tiger Woods, and the handicap system would make it equalable, so that we’d be able to have a reasonable match."
The seminars are open to all men, women and junior golfers and have a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for anyone 18 and under.
