The 2017 and 2018 Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships have been awarded to Brandon.
"Very exciting, exciting for Branch #3 Royal Canadian Legion and exciting for the city of Brandon," championship chair Barb Andrew told CKLQ’s Bruce Luebke, "This is a big event."
The event will be held in mid-August and is sanctioned by Athletics Canada.
That means some of the athletes that will compete in Brandon will eventually find their way into international competition including the Olympics.
"The aim of the championship is to support the development of athletisism within the youth of Canada," said Andrew, "It’s very possible that we could see some of these athletes that are competing here in Brandon representing Canada in the Olympics."
Up to 1,000 athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 are expected to take part in the championships, with the event to take place at UCT Stadium.
That venue will need some refreshing and renovations before the championships begin.
"We have been working with the City of Brandon on that for the past year," said Andrew, "Discussing the needs and how we will go about getting those needs met."
The economic spinoff for the city expected to be approximately three million dollars.
