– The Edmonton Oil Kings captured their second WHL championship in three seasons. Mads Eller, Curtis Lazar, Mitch Moroz, and Reid Petryk scored for Edmonton, who doubled the Portland Winterhawks 4-2 in the seventh and deciding game of the league final. Tristan Jarry made 32 saves for the Oil Kings, who advance to the Memorial Cup, which begins this weekend.
– Medora’s Trent Cassan and his Yorkton Terriers fell to 0-2 at the RBC Cup National Junior ‘A’ Hockey Championship. Coach Cassan and his Terriers gave up three second period goals 41 seconds apart and fell 6-4 against the host Vernon Vipers on Monday night. – The Montreal Canadiens are going the distance with the Boston Bruins. Carey Price made 26 saves as the Habs beat the Bruins 4-0 to force a seventh and deciding game in their second round series. Thomas Vanek scored twice for Montreal, who head to Boston for game seven on Wednesday night.
– Devante Smith-Pelly scored two goals 1:23 apart in the second period as the Anaheim Ducks got past the LA Kings 4-3. John Gibson made 39 saves for Anaheim, who lead the series three games to two.
– Team Canada has back-to-back wins at the World Hockey Championship following a 4-3 victory against the Czech Republic. Joel Ward had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Turris, Nathan Mackinnon and Morgan Rielly also scored for the Canadians, who improved their record to 2-0-1. Former Wheat Kings’ Jason Chimera and Brayden Schenn are on the roster for Canada, who are back in action on Thursday against Denmark.
– The Neelin Spartans swept a doubleheader against the Crocus Plainsmen in the Brandon High School Girls Fastball League. The Spartans knocked off the Plainsmen 19-9 and 11-2 with Calla Matienzo earning both wins on the mound. Nicole Frederickson went 4-for-5 in the first game for Neelin, while Mackenzie Bortis was 3-for-3 in the second contest for the Spartans.
– Mark Buehrle picked up his league-leading seventh win of the season as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the LA Angels 7-3. Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie homered for the Jays, who snapped a three-game slide.
– Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays is the American League Player of the Week. Encarnacion tied for the major league lead with four home runs and 10 RBI’s, while batting .321 during a seven game stretch.
– A local connection for this year’s induction class into the Order of Manitoba. Brandon product Israel Idonije of the Chicago Bears will official being recognized on May 21st at the Legislature. Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Jones, curling hall of famer Don Duguid and the ‘Voice of the Bombers’ Bob Irving are also being enshrined.
– The Winnipeg Blue Bombers did well in the pocket book in 2013, turning a profit of 2.9 million dollars. Season-ticket sales and revenue hit a record high for the Bombers in the first season at Investors Group Field.
– The Bombers have cut ties with safety Cauchy Muamba. Last season, he had two interceptions, 47 tackles, four special teams tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery.
– The Saskatchewan Roughriders have re-signed president and CEO Jim Hopson to a one-year extension. Hopson’s been board since 2005 and helped the Riders’ reach the Grey Cup four times in the last seven years, winning championships in 2007 and 2013.
– LeBron James tied a playoff career high with 49 points as the Miami Heat beat the Brooklyn Nets 102-96 for a three games to one series lead. In other action, Damian Lillard had a game-high 25 points as the Portland Trail Blazers staved off elimination by beating the San Antonio Spurs 103-92 and narrowed the series to three games to one.
