The Brandon ‘AAA’ Midget Wheat Kings have promoted Tyson Ramsey.
Ramsey is the club’s new head coach after serving as an assistant for the past three years and replaces Ken Schneider who stepped down.
"I really enjoy working with that program. I think it’s a top notch program," Ramsey told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "I’m really excited about the opportunity to be the head coach. It’s going to be a challenge and I’m looking forward to it."
Ramsey takes over from Schneider who spent four successful seasons behind the bench, which included guiding the Wheat Kings to a first-place finish in the regular season this past this year — the club’s first pennant since 2004.
"I learned a lot from Ken over the last three years and not just the last years, I coached with Ken in minor hockey a little bit. He and I have a similar philosophy and we get along really well," added Ramsey. "One of the things that Ken has done so much of is letting us have some responsibility in running the program. He’s one of the big reasons why I feel so prepared to take on this head coaching role."
Ramsey held various coaching positions with Hockey Brandon before joining the AAA Midget Wheat Kings in 2011.
He played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with the Winkler Flyers from 1993-97, with the Brandon University Bobcats from 1997-2001, and senior hockey with the AAA Ils Des Chenes North Stars and in the Tiger Hills Hockey League with the Souris Elks.
"I want to build a program that follows a structure and builds on skill development. I want to build on the program that’s already really respected in the league and in the province and have our guys work hard, be respectful and at the end of the day say that we gave everything we had," said Ramsey.
