– Mission accomplished for Canada’s national volleyball teams at the world qualifying tournament in Mississauga. Brandon’s Dustin Schneider, Rivers product Toon Van Lankvelt and the Canadian men’s team defeated Costa Rica in yesterday’s final in straight sets. On the women’s side, Dauphin’s Tabi Love had 10 kills as Canada knocked off Mexico in straight sets in the final. The Canadian teams finish with 4-0 records and secure spots in the 2014 world volleyball championships.
– Team Canada has clinched top spot in Group ‘A’ at the World Hockey Championship. Joel Ward had two goals and an assist in the Canadians’ 3-2 victory against Norway to close out the round-robin. Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets also scored for Canada, who have won six in a row and play in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
– The Guelph Storm doubled the Val-d’Or Foreurs 6-3 at the 2014 Memorial Cup to secure their spot in Sunday’s championship game. Winnipeg Jets’ draft pick Scott Kosmachuk had three assists for the Storm, who improved their record to 2-0. The Edmonton Oil Kings are facing Val-d’Or on Tuesday night with both teams at 1-1, while the host London Knights are 0-2.
– RBC Cup hero Derek Falloon of Russell is relishing his Yorkton Terriers’ title run to their first-ever national championship. Falloon finished off his Junior ‘A’ hockey career in style by scoring the overtime winner in Yorkton’s 4-3 comeback win over the Carleton Place Canadians in Sunday’s final. – The New York Rangers are going back to the Big Apple with a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Final. Hendrik Lundqvist made 40 saves, and Ryan McDonagh had a goal and an assist in the Rangers’ 3-1 win against the Habs. Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis had the other goals for the Rangers, who host Game 3 on Thursday.
– Local football icon Doug Steeves died Monday at the age of 80. Steeves spent 41 years as a coach and started all three high school programs in the Wheat City. He was enshrined into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and was among the 2013 induction class into the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame. For more on this story, click here.
– Kurtis Cullen of Brandon is no longer in the running for the big prize in doubles competition at Canadian Racquetball Championships. Cullen and teammate Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge lost their quarter-final match in the top division, but bounced back to win their semifinal on the consolation side. Cullen and Iwaasa play for the Blue Division title on Tuesday, before going their separate ways. Cullen is seeded ninth going into singles competition on Wednesday.
– Tim Duncan scored 27 points as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-105 in the opening game of the NBA’s Western Conference Final.
