– The Minnedosa Chancellors completed a semifinal sweep in the Westman High School Rugby League. Sydney Ingenmey scored two tries and kicked four converts in leading Minnedosa to a 38-0 victory over the Dauphin Clippers in the varsity girls’ game. On the boys’ side, Logan Patterson had a pair of tries and Justin McKinnon kicked three converts as the Chancellors shut out the Vincent Massey Vikings 26-0. Minnedosa moves on to the championship finals this weekend.
– The Virden Golden Bears have punched their ticket for the provincial high school baseball championship. Wyatt Kalynuk tossed a complete-game five-hitter, while Tanner Lewis drove in the game winning RBI as Virden beat the Boissevain Broncos 2-1 in the Zone 9 Final. The Bears will be in Brandon for the playdowns from May 29th to 31st in Brandon.
– The Neelin Spartans have sewn up a spot in Brandon High School School Soccer League varsity girls’ semifinal. Alanah Levandosky had the lone goal and Kristine Ward earned the clean sheet as the Spartans beat the Crocus Plainsmen 1-0. The city championships are Thursday at Vincent Massey with the winners advancing to provincials in Winnipeg on May 30th and 31st.
– Carlee Milljour of the Nellie McClung Stingers’ fastball team is the Rural High School Athlete of the Week. She helped the Stingers go 6-1 in league play to finish in first-place in Zone 6 going into the playoffs. During that span, she went 9-for-19 at the plate and scored 15 runs. She also guided Nellie McClung to a championship and runner-up finish at tournaments in Boissevain and Grand Valley this season.
– Anthony Richard scored in double overtime as the Val-d’Or Foreurs beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 at the 2014 Memorial Cup. Antoine Bibeau made 47 saves for Val-d’Or, who secure a spot in the semifinals. Henrik Samuelsson and Curtis Lazar had a goal and an assist each for the Oil Kings. The final game of the round-robin goes Wednesday night, between the host London Knights and Guelph Storm. Guelph is already in Sunday’s final, while the Knights need a win to force a tiebreaker against Edmonton.
– Kurtis Cullen of Brandon got the men’s doubles consolation prize at the Canadian Racquetball Championship in Brossard, Quebec. Cullen teamed up with Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge and won the Blue Division title with a straight sets win in the final. Cullen is now focusing his attention on the singles competition; he’s seeded ninth and plays his first match on Wednesday.
– The Brandon Curling Club is $30,000 richer after getting the green light from City Council for a grant to host the 2015 Safeway Championship. The provincial men’s curling championship is coming back for the first time since 2008, and runs February 4th to 8th at the Keystone Centre.
– The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added some NFL experience to their lineup with the addition of former Detroit Lion Kevin Smith. He was chosen in the third round of the 2008 draft and spent five seasons with the Lions. In 54 games, the 28-year-old ran for 2,346 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also made 123 catches for 1,082 yards and another five TD’s.
– Saskatchewan Roughriders’ linebacker Cory Huclack is calling it a career after seven CFL seasons. The Winnipeg native played with the Bombers, the Montreal Alouettes and most recently the Riders for the past four seasons. He retires as a two-time Grey Cup champion with Montreal in 2009 and Saskatchewan in 2013.
– Miami got even with Indiana. Dwayne Wade scored 23 points and LeBron James had 22 as the Heat downed the Pacers 87-83. The NBA’s Eastern Conference Final is tied at ones.
– The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the odds and won the NBA Draft Lottery. The Cavs’ will have the #1 overall pick for the second year in a row. They had a 1.7% chance of winning. Milwaukee will choose second, Philadelphia third with Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz rounding out the top five picks.
– Edwin Encarnacion had a pair of two-run homers as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4. The Jays have won six of their last eight games.
