Cranbrook, BC (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped their third in a row on Wednesday night as they fell 4-3 in overtime to the Kootenay ICE.
It was a tough start for the Brandon Wheat Kings who gave up the games first goal on the first shot of the night. Former Wheat King Jaeger White would take a pass from Peyton Krebs and beat Jiri Patera cleanly to give the ICE and early lead.
However, the Wheat Kings would respond on the powerplay as Chase Hartje registered his first goal of the season to tie the game at one. Just two minutes later White would strike again for the ICE beating Patera five-hole for his team-leading 8th of the season.
With less than 2:00 to go in the period, Ben McCartney weaved his way into the zone, dropped a pass to Zach Wytinck who fired a shot off the pad of Duncan McGovern. The rebound landed on the stick of Marcus Sekundiak who buried his first of the season to send the teams to the locker room tied at two.
After a scoreless second period, it was. a pair of special teams goals that sent this game to overtime. First, it was Zach Wytinck scoring on a shorthanded breakaway. The goal was Brandon’s 3rd shorthanded goal of the season. Just minutes later it was a Kootenay powerplay goal from Jonathon Smart that knotted the game back up at three sending this one to overtime.
After a flurry of chances at both ends, Peyton Krebs snapped the ICE’s six-game losing streak by ripping his 5th of the season through the five-hole of Jiri Patera to win the game.
Brandon finished the night 1/5 on the powerplay while the ICE scored once on eight opportunities.
The Wheat Kings will travel overnight to Victoria where they will take on the Royals Saturday night.
