Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – It wasn’t a textbook win, but the Brandon Bobcats men’s basketball team came back from 16 points down, to shock the Manitoba Bisons 101-100 on Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre.
BU rallied from a 16-point fourth quarter deficit to split the season opening weekend series.
A third quarter surge of 21-6 had the U-of-M firmly in the drivers seat going into the final frame.
Early in the fourth, Kobyn Jopp hit an early three-pointer, which started the Bobcats rally.
Troy Grant found his groove, as he finished with a team-high 28 points.
Pookie Saunders was clutch, creating a turnover and scoring what proved to be the game-winning basket with under 40 seconds to go.
Cooper collected 25 points and Saunders added 20 for the Bobcats, who evened their record to 1-and-1.
Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team fell in a similar matter from their Friday game on Saturday.
Brandon carried a 42-34 lead into the half, but the Bobcats ran out of gas near the end of the game and Manitoba won, closing the game on a 30-7 run in the final frame, winning 86-61.
Lauren Anderson had a second straight double-double for the Bobcats, this time finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead her team in both categories.
Hailey Maas had 16 points, all coming in the first half, while Adrianna Proulx finished with 14 points.
The win moves Manitoba’s record to 2-0 early in the conference season while Brandon sits at 0-2.
Both Bobcats teams head out to Kelowna next weekend to take on UBC-Okanagan on Friday and Saturday.
