Over the weekend I attended my very first Gender Reveal Party. It wasn’t so much a party as a call over Facebook messenger with everyone in their own homes, enjoying a drink as we awaited the reveal. As this was my first Gender Reveal Party, I didn’t know what to expect. Smoke bombs that when smashed reveal the gender? Someone reading the results off a piece of paper and everyone finds out at the same time? Balloons in a box that the expecting couple opens and the balloons are the color of the gender? Nope. None of that. It was a simple slice into a cake and see what the gender was. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Except it wasn’t that surprising for the parents to be. As they were cutting, somebody said “who baked the cake?” to which the new mom said “Me!”. Well didn’t that just cause a simultaneous “huh” from everyone! The parents already knew! I thought that the whole point was for everyone to find out at once. Nope. It was just a reveal to everyone else. No one cared that much, but it was a surprise. Why not have someone else bake the cake and then it’s a surprise for everyone! I guess it’s the parent’s choice about how to reveal it, and they are free to do what they want. It was just very unexpected!
In hindsight, I’m kinda glad it happened this way! Compared to the other announcements I’ve seen this was pretty tame and it gave us some laughs. What do you think though? For a gender reveal party, should the parents know the gender beforehand or should they be kept in the dark like everyone else?
