Today (Tuesday, September 22)the Wal-Mart location of McD’s will be reopening (closed since March 21st) with new hours of 8 AM to 8 PM. And to celebrate, I had to try the new McDonald’s three spicy chicken sandwiches! As part of a special offering, the spicy habanero McChicken, the spicy scotch bonnet McChicken, and the spiciest ghost pepper Mc chicken are now on the menu for a limited time and I tried them all this past Friday. I had to see which one would be the best, and the results are surprising.
First up-the spicy habanero McChicken. It had a zesty taste to it and as far as the heat is concerned it was totally manageable and rather tasty. I would go so far as to say one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had. Tracy wanted a bite and said that while it was spicy it was not too hot for her, which meant that it was good for general consumption. So if you’re not a fan of the heat the spicy habanero is likely your best choice.
Next up-the spicier scotch bonnet McChicken. This one didn’t have quite as much flavor as the spicy habanero McChicken and had much more heat. What it lacked in flavor it made up in heat so it was mostly heated in this one. I like the spicy habanero better than the spicy scotch bonnet.
Lastly-the spiciest ghost pepper McChicken. The ghost pepper is one of the hottest peppers on the planet and for McDonald’s to make a sauce out of this was very brave and interesting. I took my first bite with anticipation that it was going to be super hot and it was certainly on the hotter side of the scale with regards to food that I’ve eaten in my life. However certainly not the hottest thing by any stretch of the imagination. But for a person of mild taste buds, you may want to avoid the ghost pepper McChicken. For someone not used to spicy food it most certainly would make your eyes water and could take your breath away (likely the sandwich that most people are eating in a TV commercial you can see below).
Sidenote: My wife got the BLT with crispy chicken when we did the taste test and I couldn’t help but notice that her burger was almost twice the size of mine. So in the end I was rather perturbed that while the spicy chicken sandwiches were tasty they were small in comparison to other chicken offerings. But at the end of the day, the winner is (believe it or not) the mildest version of this sandwich! So if you’re not in the spice go get a spicy habanero McChicken because they are tasty I just wish they were bigger!
