Daly House Museum is please to present “School Days: History of Schools and School-life in Brandon.” – a temporary exhibit for the month of September.
In a media release, the museum says “the exhibition showcases the history of various schools during a time when many new schools were being built in the City. The display using photographs and artifacts from the museum’s collections explores the history of schools such as Brandon Collegiate Institute (now New Era School), Earl Oxford School, King George School and many more. Artifacts featured in the exhibit include a wide range of old-time school supplies, yearbooks, textbooks, maps, and photographs from Brandon’s educational past. Visitors can even share memories of their school days in the exhibits memory journal so their school day recollections can be shared with future generations.
The exhibit was curated by summer interns Kaelyn Delaurier and Tanner Hall. Both interns will be attending Brandon University this fall and appreciated learning the history of education during and how student-life has changed since Brandon’s early years.
“There are so many interesting things on display.” says Exhibit Assistant Kaelyn Delaurier. “My personal favourite has to be the 1912 Christy School Supplies sales ledger. It’s just so unique and features lists of items the company sold to school districts across the prairies and local historical figures such as G.R. Coldwell, the house’s second owner.”
“The old copy of Brandon University’s yearbook the ‘Sickle’ from 1971 has to be my favourite artifact.” commented Tanner Hall, the museum’s summer historical Interpreter. “I go to Brandon University and was part of the yearbook team in high school back home in Humbolt, Saskatchewan. So seeing it on display brings back some fun memories.”
While most of the schools featured in the exhibit are either long gone or moved into modern facilities, one thing remains true: students will always be willing to learn whether at an elementary school, university, or even at a museum.
The School Days exhibit also shares a space with a mini exhibit on the Prince Edward Hotel. The mini exhibit showcases photographs, menus and artifacts from the once cherished hotel. Both exhibits run from September 1st to September 29th in the Daly House’s Second Floor Gallery. Daly House Museum is located at 122-18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
