-The Brandon Wheat Kings and the Keystone Centre have inked a new ten-year lease agreement. Team owner Jared Jacobsen says the deal will provide the franchise with some stability, and will allow for arena upgrades including replacing seating and improving accessibility. -Two local female hockey players, Brandon goalie Kristen Campbell and Deloraine defender Ashton Bell, are among the 268 eligible players who have declared for the very first Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft. The six P-W-H-L teams will select 90 players in the 15-round draft. The group consists of 146 forwards, 78 defenders and 44 goaltenders. Minnesota has the first overall pick followed by Toronto, Boston, New York, Ottawa and Montreal. The draft takes place on Monday. Meantime – Canadian Tire has become the first funding partner of the Professional Women’s Hockey League. The multi-year agreement includes sponsorship of the league’s inaugural draft next week.
-In MJHL pre-season action, the Winkler Flyers downed the Selkirk Steelers 7-4 – it was Steinbach over Niverville 6-5 – and in a battle of Winnipeg teams, the Freeze beat the Blues 6-5 in a shootout.
-Brandon University Bobcats veteran midfielder Zach Woods has been named MCAC Athlete of the Week. He scored in both matches for the Bobcats on opening weekend against St. Boniface and ACC. The Bobcats’ men’s and women’s soccer teams are both back in action this Sunday when they Providence at Health Living Centre Field. The men are currently 1-0-and-1 – the women are 1-and-1.
-The Assiniboine Community College Cougars men’s and women’s soccer teams also have games this weekend. Both teams will visit the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers on September 16th – and then host CMU at the Sportsplex on September 17th. Both Cougars teams are 0-and-1.
-Canada Soccer says its women’s team will skip the upcoming Pan American games in Chile in October. They say the timing of the event, which starts before and finishes after FIFA international windows, is a reason they’ll pass.
-The Toronto Blue Jays were shutout 10-0 by the Texas Rangers. The Jays will try and avoid a series sweep today.
-and in the NFL – the Philadelphia Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings tonight. Last Sunday – the Eagles beat the Pats 25-20 – while the Vikings lost 20-17 to the Buccaneers.
