Pi Day: A Celebration of Math and Deliciousness , number enthusiasts and pie lovers alike come together to celebrate Pi Day. But what exactly is Pi, and why do we dedicate a whole day to it?
Pi (π) is a mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. No matter the size of the circle—whether it’s the rim of a soup can or the equator of a planet—the ratio remains the same. It’s approximately equal to 3.14, which is why we celebrate on March 14th (3/14).
People have known about Pi for thousands of years. It even appears in the Bible! Ancient civilizations like the Babylonians, Greeks, and Chinese attempted to calculate more accurate versions of Pi. The famous mathematician Archimedes made the first theoretical and precise calculation of Pi around 250 B.C. using polygons.
Fast forward to today, and computers have allowed us to calculate Pi to an astonishing 13.3 trillion decimal places! The hunt for more digits continues, driven by our fascination with this never-ending, non-repeating number.
