-Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness has retired after 38 seasons in the NHL. Bowness led the team to a 98-57-9 record during his two seasons as head coach – and a pair of Stanley Cup Playoffs appearances. He’s also a finalist for this season’s Jack Adams Award, presented annually to the league’s head coach of the year. This season, the Colorado Avalanche eliminated the Jets from the first-round in 5 games.
-The Dallas Stars beat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 on Sunday to advance to the second-round of the NHL playoffs. They’ll face the Colorado Avalanche beginning Tuesday. Also yesterday – the New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 to take a 1-0 lead in their second round series.
-There’s just one NHL playoff game tonight – the Bostons Bruins, who knocked off the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, visit the the Florida Panthers for Game 1 of their second-round series.
-Canada beat the U-S 6-4 to capture the gold medal at the 2024 World U-18 Hockey Championship in Finland. Medicine Hat Tigers forward Gavin McKenna had a hat-trick and set a new Canadian tournament goals record with 10. He also finished with 20 points, the most by a Canadian at a single U18 men’s worlds. Brandon Wheat Kings defenseman Charlie Elick and forward Roger McQueen were also on Canada’s roster.
-Canada won its second game in-a-row at the world para hockey championship with a 10-0 thumping of Italy on Sunday. Canada plays Czechia on Tuesday. The U.S. and China were tied atop their pool at 2-0 on Sunday. The semifinals are Friday and the medal games Sunday. The Canadians won a silver medal at the 2023 world para championship in Moose Jaw, where they lost 6-1 to the United States in the final.
-and 18-to-1 longshot ‘Mystik Dan’ won the 150th Kentucky Derby in a three-horse photo finish on Saturday earning $3.1 million dollars
