-The New York Rangers are a win away from advancing to the NHL East Conference final. They beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime last night to lead their series 3-0. Also last night, the Dallas Stars tied their second-round series at one win apiece with the Colorado Avalanche after a 5-3 win. Tonight, the Florida Panthers visit the Boston Bruins also tied at one – and the Canucks host the Edmonton Oilers with Vancouver up 1-0.
-The Western Hockey League Championship series begins tonight – the Moose Jaw Warriors are in Portland for Game One against the Winterhawks.
-The Brandon Wheat Kings picked 10 players in the WHL draft on Thursday. They took forward Chase Surkan of Regina with the 14th overall pick in round one – forward Prabh Bhathal of Winnipeg in round two – defenseman Easten Turko of Brandon in round three – goaltender Urijah Moosetail of Brandon & defenseman Ethan Young of Regina in round four – forward Alex Letourneau of Legal, Alberta & forward Carson Park of Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan in round five – forward Hudson Postnikoff of Saskatoon in round six – forward Mason Chubey of Winnipeg in round eight and defenseman Tristan Follick of Langford, B.C. in round nine.
-The MJHL Champion Winkler Flyers won their Centennial Cup round robin opener Thursday in Oakville, Ontario with a 4-2 victory over the Superior International Junior Hockey League champion Sioux Lookout Bombers. The Flyers next game is Saturday against the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Melfort Mustangs.
-Boston edged Montreal 2-1 in game one of their best-of-five Professional Women’s Hockey League semifinal. Game two goes Saturday in Montreal.
-and Winnipeg Blue Bombers rookie camp ends today – main camp starts Sunday. The Bombers first pre-season game is Monday, May 20th in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
