-The Moose Jaw Warriors won their first Western Hockey League Championship in franchise history last night with a 4-2 over the Portland Winterhawks. The Warriors took the series in 4 straight games and will represent the WHL at the Memorial Cup beginning May 24th.
-In the NHL Wednesday night, the Colorado Avalanche beat the Stars 5-3. Dallas still leads the series 3-games-to-2. Tonight, the Rangers visit the Carolina Hurricanes with New York up 3-2 – and the Edmonton Oilers take on the Canucks in Vancouver tied at 2.
-The Winkler Flyers will meet the Calgary Canucks and the Miramichi Timberwolves will face the Navan Grads in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Centennial Cup Friday in Oakville, Ontario. The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions finished third in Group B.
-Canada plays Norway today at the Men’s World Hockey Championship. Canada is in 3rd place in Group A with 8 points. Switzerland leads the group with 11 points, while Czechia is next with nine.
-Minnesota beat Toronto 1-0 in double overtime in the Professional Women’s Hockey League semi-finals. The best of five series is now tied at 2. Claire Butorac scored early in the second overtime to give Minnesota the win. Minnesota goalie Maddie Rooney made 19 saves for her second-straight shutout. Toronto’s Kristen Campbell from Brandon had 28 saves, including 14 in the third period to help get the game into overtime. The winner of Game 5 on Friday will meet Boston in the final.
-The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are only four days into training camp, but players are dropping like flies. Global Sports reports the Bombers have lost two defensive starters to possible long-term injuries after the club placed linebacker Adam Bighill, cornerback Jamal Parker and defensive back Noah Hallett on the six-game injured list with undisclosed injuries on Wednesday. While players can be removed from the six-game injured list early, it means all three will at least miss the season opener. The Bombers also made their first round of cuts of the main camp by releasing six players. All CFL teams had to trim their roster to 75 players, not including draft picks.
-Players and coaches with the Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League will be in Brandon later this month for a free youth basketball camp. It’s open to kids aged 9 to 14 at Brandon University on May 26th.
