-The Florida Panthers beat the New York Rangers 3-0 to take game one of the NHL Eastern Conference final. Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves for his first post-season shutout. Tonight, the Edmonton Oilers visit the Dallas Stars to start the Western Conference final.
-Canada takes on Slovakia today in the quarterfinals at the Men’s World Hockey Championship. Canada finished the preliminary round in first place in Group A with 19 points. Slovakia was fourth in Group B with 12 points.
-Toronto goalie Kristen Campbell of Brandon, New York’s Corinne Schroeder of Elm Creek – and Aerin Frankel of Boston are the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Year finalists. 26-year-old Campbell led the league in wins (16) and shutouts (three) as she backstopped Toronto to the No. 1 seed in the regular season. In 22 appearances, she had a .927 save percentage with a 1.99 goals-against average. Boston and Minnesota are tied at one in the first-ever PWHL final. Game 3 goes Friday in St. Paul.
-In the South West Baseball League – the Rivers Comets beat the Oak River Dodgers 5-1. This evening, the defending champion Boissevain Centennials face the Brewers in Wawanesa.
-The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 9-2 for their first series win in a month.
-and the WNBA is coming to Toronto. Kilmer Sports Ventures has been awarded a women’s professional basketball team. The as-yet-unnamed team will play out of Coca-Cola Coliseum, an arena in downtown Toronto at Exhibition Place. The team will start playing in May 2026. It’ll be the WNBA’s 14th franchise, with the expansion Golden State Valkyries set to start play next year.
