-Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck is now a two-time Vezina trophy winner. He was named the NHL’s most outstanding goaltender in a landslide at the league’s annual awards. Other winners included the Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan McKinnon as most valuable player, the Chicago Blackhawk’s Connor Bedard for rookie of the year, and the Vancouver Canucks’ Quinn Hughes won best defenceman.
-The NHL draft goes today and tomorrow and the Brandon Wheat King to watch is Charlie Elick. If he’s taken in the first 32 picks – Elick would become the 25th player in Wheat Kings history to be a first-round pick. The San Jose Sharks have the first overall pick and are expected to select Macklin Celebrini of Boston University. The Winnipeg Jets do not have a pick in round one. The Jets dealt their first round pick (26th overall) to the Montreal Canadiens for Sean Monahan.
-The BC Lions improved to 3-and-1 with a 24-21 win over the Edmonton Elks (o-and-4) yesterday. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-and-3) will try again for their first win of the season Saturday in Calgary against the Stampeders (1-and-1).
-The Round of 16 is set for this weekend at Euro 2024. There are two games on Saturday – Switzerland meets Italy and Germany faces Denmark, and at the Copa America tournament on Saturday, 1-and-1 Canada plays Chile who have a draw and a loss.
-In the South West Baseball League – the Elkhorn Expos beat the Rivers Comets 23-8. The standings so far: the Boissevain Centennials lead the league at 11-and-1, Rivers is next at 9-and-3, the Deloraine Royals are 8-and-4, the Reston Rockets are 6-and-4, and the Wawanesa Brewers are in fifth place at 4-and-6. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.
