The Peacock Phenomenon
Jim Ludlam, affectionately known as the “peacock man,” tends to a small flock of peacocks kept in a barn at the former sanctuary site. Additionally, around 15 free-range peacocks roam the streets and yards during the warm months. These majestic birds, originally from India, adapt surprisingly well to the cold weather, even foraging in the bush during mild winters1.
Mixed Reactions
Not everyone in Souris is enamored with the fan-tailed feathered friends. Some residents love them, while others find them pesky. The peacocks occasionally peck at shiny truck bumpers, causing minor damage. Despite this, the community has embraced the peacock phenomenon as part of its unique identity, surpassing even the iconic swinging bridge as a tourist draw1.
Peacock Calling Contest
As part of the annual Peacock Days & Fair, Souris hosts the Peacock Calling Competition. Sponsored by Whitfield Drugs, the contest invites participants to squawk and shriek, mimicking the town’s beloved birds. Last year, over 50 participants joined in the quirky event, celebrating Souris’ special ambassadors2.
