Just over a month ago, it was announced Brandon would soon have a new sister city: Chervonohrad, a city in the Lviv Oblast region of the country. Yesterday, the two cities made their agreement official.
In a virtual ceremony, Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett and Chervonohrad’s Mayor Andriy Zalivskyi signed an agreement of twinning and cooperation. This agreement includes economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and shared initiatives in education and environmental sustainability.
According to a release from the City of Brandon, the new agreement should open up new avenues for trade, tourism, and cultural enrichment.
“Both cities recognize the importance of working together to address global challenges and to promote peace and understanding across borders,” the release reads.
Situated in western Ukraine not far from the border with Poland, Chervonohrad is a city of approximately 65,000 (as of 2020). Brandon becomes the second Manitoban city to twin with a Ukrainian city in the Lviv Oblast region. Winnipeg has been a sister city of Lviv, the region’s capital, since 1973.
More than 400 Ukrainian families have settled in Brandon since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
