Word is the province will begin paving Brandon’s 18th Street next week with construction scheduled to end, between Rosser and Aberdeen Avenues, sometime in October. 18th Street was named the province’s ‘Worst Road’ by CAA Manitoba this past spring.

Classes for students in Brandon School Division, Brandon University and Assiniboine College all begin Wednesday (Sept 4). For BSD today it’s an Administration Day, at BU: Orientation Week has started – and student welcome events are underway across Assiniboine campuses.

To help ensure no student goes hungry, Brandon University is launching its ‘campus cupboard’ on September 10th. A report back in 2022 said about 40% of post-secondary students in Canada face food insecurity. BU’s community cafe will make and donate freezer meals, and other items will be available at low prices.

Stress for parents has intensified so much, the U-S Surgeon General has issued a public health advisory. Previous advisories have included the risks of gun violence and smoking. Some reasons for increased parental stress include the high cost of living, social media and the youth mental health crisis.

There’s a new trend in de-stressing and it’s called – ‘cow-cuddling’. At a farm in St. John’s – $20 gets you 20-minutes to feed, groom, and maybe even snuggle with one of their animals. A favourite is Chloe, a 1,200 pound Guernsey. She likes to stay sitting down making her an excellent cuddler.

and Health Canada has issued a recall for a dumbbell from the Fisher-Price ‘Baby Biceps Gift Set’. The grey caps on the ends of the dumbbell can come off, posing a choking hazard. A kettlebell toy, protein shake bottle and wearable headband are not included in the recall.
