The potential for hefty fines is apparently not deterring people from illegally dumping at some of Brandon’s recycling depots. Household garbage, tree branches, even a mattress were found at the depot on 34th Street and Victoria Avenue and the city is looking at ways to crackdown. Options include staffing the site, putting up fencing or adding cameras.

A 59-year-old man is dead after crashing and rolling his pickup truck last Saturday near Ninette southeast of Brandon. RCMP say the driver lost control and hit a concrete portion of a bridge railing on Highway 23, causing the truck to roll and collide with an SUV. The people in the SUV were not hurt.

Parks Canada is removing a curtain it set up in Clear Lake last month to contain zebra mussels. It was in place for just two days before it was dislodged and damaged by winds. The agency plans to continue monitoring for the invasive mussels until freeze up.

The body of late Grand Chief Cathy Merrick will lie in state at Manitoba’s legislative building on Wednesday. You can pay your respects between Noon and 5:00 pm, and a book of condolences will be placed at the base of the Grand Staircase. The 63-year-old Merrick, the first woman to head the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, died suddenly last Friday.
