Canada’s annual inflation rate reached the central bank’s target in August as it cooled to 2% – its lowest level since February 2021. There was a drop in gas prices, the cost of telephone services, clothing and footwear –
while rents continued their relentless rise.

Prairie Mountain Health is planning to build a new daycare centre in Brandon’s east end. ‘Brandon Day Care’ will serve not only PMH employees, but the general public, and will have up to 150 spaces. The facility is to be built on Park Street between McTavish and Victoria Avenues on three properties owned by the health authority.

At Brandon city council on Monday, the Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples’ Council outlined its plans for this month’s Truth and Reconciliation Week. Among the activities will be a first-ever canoe event at Riverbank Discovery Centre. This year, September 30th will be a statutory holiday to remember the harms done by the residential school system.

Manitoba RCMP are reminding drone operators to steer clear of emergency responders – this after a STARS helicopter was delayed in landing at a crash scene near Ste. Anne last week. Operators can face a $1,000 fine for flying drones where police and EMT’s are attending.

The federal New Democrats held onto Winnipeg’s Elmwood-Transcona riding. Leila Dance won yesterday’s byelection beating Conservative Colin Reynolds by just over 1,100 votes. Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have lost a second stronghold – this time in Montreal to the Bloc Quebecois.

Ottawa has announced changes to some mortgage rules to try and make housing more affordable. The government has increased the cap on insured mortgages from one-million to $1.5 million dollars – and first-time buyers, and those purchasing a newly-built home, will be allowed to take out loans for a 30-year period.
