It’s been a strong start to 2024-25 for the Brandon Wheat Kings, winning both games on opening weekend by a combined score of 10-3 against a pair of division rivals. To help keep the momentum going, they’ve picked up some reinforcements from the pros.
The Columbus Blue Jackets announced this morning they’re returning defenseman Charlie Elick to the Wheat Kings. That would leave Elick plenty of time to rejoin the team before they head on the road to face the Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades.
Elick, an 18-year-old right handed defenseman, posted 27 points in 65 games for the Wheat Kings last season, 25 of which came at even strength. He also played a punishing physical style that meshed nicely with his smooth skating and 6-foot-3 frame.
After the strong showing in his draft year, Elick was selected in the second round, 36th overall, by the Blue Jackets in this past summer’s NHL entry draft. He took part in the team’s summer development camp, their rookie tournament games in Buffalo, and their training camp before making his exhibition debut against the Buffalo Sabres.
Elick’s return would have given the Wheat Kings nine defensemen on the active roster, so they’ve reassigned 2008-born defenseman Cameron Allard to reduce that number to eight.
The next game for the Wheat Kings is Friday, September 27, as they travel to Prince Albert to face the Raiders. Puck drop is 8:00 Central Time.
